Purple Turtle Design

Is a full service Interior Design firm specializing in creating customized kitchen and bath solutions.  Whether it's a renovation or new construction, by providing clients with a comprehensive design plan, Purple Turtle Design takes the uncertainties out of the design process.

We believe that each client is unique and therefore, each project should reflect their lifestyle

We begin by getting to know our client in order to establish a design direction that best reflects the client, not us.  We will walk you through the design process from planning through to completion.  From the initial concepts, to material selection, budget planning and hiring trades to overseeing installation, and assistance with those finishing touches, Purple Turtle Design will be there to help you.

The renovation or build process can be very overwhelming for most homeowners.  We can help you to prioritize your goals, and find the best possible solution to your design puzzle.  Our goal is to guide you through the maze of possible plans, materials and finishes so that you can sit back and enjoy the process confident in the outcome.

Purple Turtle Design is led by Principal Designer Cindy MacKenzie, AKBD.  Cindy began her career in design working with an established design/build firm, giving her experience in all aspects of design from concept to completion.  By understanding what it takes to bring a project to reality, Cindy is better able to provide a seamless design that will translate into a smoother build process.  Her attention to detail, and experience in budget planning mean that her clients can have full confidence in the design and build process.

In 2008 Cindy earned her Associate Kitchen & Bath Designer certification from the National Kitchen & Bath Association.  As a Certified member of the NKBA, Cindy is dedicated to providing quality design and professional service.

The Process

At Purple Turtle Design we believe that collaboration is the key to success. We have worked hard to develop good relationships with our renovator, cabinetmaker, electrician, plumber, painter and most importantly our CLIENTS. We feel it is important to include as many of those who will be part of creating your dream space in the design process as possible!

This process starts with you, and doesn't finish until you are completely comfortable with the direction of the design and the materials going into your renovation.

We start by interviewing you and asking all the key questions - Who will use the space? What activities do you do here? How do you want your space to feel? We ask you to show us around your home, taking careful note of the areas and items that are important to you and your family. After carefully listening to your specific wants and needs, we get to work!

We will put together your preliminary concepts and work with you to revise and tailor the concepts to a final design that functions for you and your family. Once your layout is complete, we will help guide you through the selections needed to bring your dream space into reality.  With a combination of research and on-site shopping, we will ensure that your space looks as good as it works!

We don`t stop there! Once your design and selections are complete, we work closely with the renovation team to ensure that the vision we worked so carefully with you to create is brought into reality!  On-site changes are sometimes a part of the renovation process, and we are there to consult with the trades to  keep those revisions in-line with the overall design. As your renovation comes to a close, we can also assist you with those finishing touches to really personalize your space.

We understand that undertaking a major renovation can be both exciting and overwhelming, and our goal is to walk beside you from start to finish, helping you create a space that tells the story of you and your family.

Design Drawings

Your preliminary concept package will include up to three concepts. These are all different ways your space could be put together to meet your criteria. The drawing package includes floor plans as well as 3D line drawings and overviews to really help you to visualize your space.

We work together, reviewing your concepts, and fine tuning until we reach a final design that gets you excited for the demo! Generally there are two to three revisions during this process. Along the way we consult with the professionals who will be bringing these concepts to reality, ensuring that everyone understands the desired outcome and troubleshooting ahead of time.

Material Specifications

Now that we have the perfect layout, the fun really begins! With hundreds of options out there, choosing the right material can be a daunting task! Throughout the design process, we have been asking questions, listening to you and observing your surroundings. We draw inspiration from your life to help guide you towards refining your own personal style. Everything from flooring, cabinetry, countertops and tile to paint colours, hardware and accessories, we are here to assist you in finding the perfect balance between form and function. Once all the selections are made, we coordinate between you and the renovator to ensure that all the trades have the information and approvals needed to keep your project moving ahead smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the design process take?

The design process can vary greatly depending on the scope of the project. For a typical kitchen or master suite renovation, we like to allow four to six weeks for the layout development. Ultimately, the timeline is driven by the homeowner. We want to make sure that you are comfortable with the decisions being made each step of the way, and will take the time to ensure that you understand each concept before moving on. Once your layout is complete, we work with you to complete the selections needed for the renovation, and remain available to you throughout the construction stage.

How much does the design cost?

Design fees are unique to each project we work on. We offer a wide range of services ranging from simple two hour consultations, to full home re-design and specifications. After our first meeting, we will prepare for you a detailed Scope of Service that will outline the services we will provide and the corresponding fee. Our design retainers are based on the number of hours we will be putting into assisting you with your design development. All costs are presented up front prior to the commencement of work.

We have a good idea for what we want, why do we need a designer?

Fantastic! We love working with clients who have a strong sense of what works well for them. In most cases, you will need, in the least,  drawings for your permit applications. Having a solid set of drawings ensures that your renovator knows exactly what it is you wish to accomplish and that there will be no surprises at the end as well as allowing you to have more accurate pricing right from the start. We have years of education and experience to offer you, bringing with us solutions and ideas that you may have not considered. We are trained to watch for possible conflicts and resolve them before you begin construction. A designer will help you to explore all of the "what ifs" ahead of time, saving you time and money.

What makes you different from other designers?

We believe that what most sets us apart from others in our field is our collaborative approach and our strong relationships with the trades that support us. Since our inception in 2010, we have worked closely with Fire-Ant Contracting (and their various sub-contractors) to provide a seamless design/build process. We involve each other throughout both the planning and the construction stages, ensuring that the primary focus remains on the homeowner and their vision. This enables us to provide you with a fixed cost contract. We work to develop that same open relationship with our clients. It is so important to us that each of our clients is as comfortable with us as your team as they are with their final design.

Will we have a say in whats happening?

Absolutely! In fact, you have all the say! Our job is not to change your home to boost our portfolio. Our role is to help you discern what your needs are and to prioritize those needs. We work closely with, asking questions, looking at images and developing a design that not only fits your needs, but tells your personal story.

Clent Reviews

Claire & Jason - Calgary, AB

Cindy (Purple Turtle Design) has been working with us for over a year. She was brought in on our project (a whole home renovation with an addition) and in the beginning stages, she worked with our architect to create a home that would meet the needs of our growing family. After we settled on the size and scope of the project, Cindy came up with various designs for our kitchen and master bathroom ensuite. Once we'd chosen our desired layouts, she listened to our concerns and fine-tuned the designs accordingly. She has been instrumental in guiding us through this very exciting process; she listens and makes excellent suggestions based on our needs and wishes. Her communication style is open and honest and we've especially appreciated the consideration she's shown as we've tried to balance our wishes and our budget. Cindy has also spent time researching options (for windows/doors, plumbing, flooring, countertops, cabinets, paint colours, etc.), helping us with selections, and communicating with our contractor and his trades to ensure that the choices we've made are smart from a building perspective but also work aesthetically. Cindy is creative, thoughtful, efficient and collaborative in her approach. It has been a pleasure to have her on this renovation journey. We would not hesitate to recommend her for your renovation or building project.

Denise D - Calgary, AB

My husband and I had the opportunity to work with Cindy from Purple Turtle Design on a kitchen and bath renovation. Cindy took the time to help us get our design plans perfect, even though this took us a few months of pondering before we made a decision. She did not rush us, but offered constructive and helpful advice and remained patient. She asked me to send her my idea book from Houzz to learn more about my style. When we did our shopping selections, it was fun, quick and stress free because she was able to show me products that she knew I would like. Cindy is personable, honest, conscientious and fun to work with! I have no hesitation recommending her and can only hope we can work with her again in the future. Thank you, Cindy, for all your advice and help on our renovation adventure.

Cindy and her team at Purple Turtle did an amazing job coming up with multiple concepts for the space that I was renovating. All of the possible scenarios were attractive and I was quickly able to come to a decision on my favourite. Cindy and her team are extremely responsive to my needs and flexible on meeting times as I do not have a lot of time in my day. Overall I'm extremely satisfied with Purple Turtle and will certainly use them for any future projects.
